Who are we?
Shinkai Dojo is a traditional Japanese martial arts school rooted in discipline, structure, and strong community.
Based in New York Cityโs Financial District, we work with families who care deeply about how their children grow โ not just physically, but in focus, confidence, and character. Our students come from many backgrounds, but they all train together under the same expectations: show up ready to work, treat others with respect, and take pride in steady progress.
We keep our classes focused so instructors can actually teach. That means real correction, real guidance, and real relationships built over time. Students arenโt lost in the crowd here, and families arenโt treated like numbers.
Shinkai Dojo isnโt about quick wins or shortcuts. Itโs about doing things the right way, building skill with intention, and creating a space where kids, teens, and adults can train seriously while still feeling supported and part of something bigger.
What we offer
Traditional Karate, Taught the Right Way
Our core program is traditional Japanese karate taught with structure, clarity, and purpose. Students train in kihon (fundamentals), kata (forms), kumite (sparring), and practical self-defense, with an emphasis on correct technique, discipline, and steady progression.
This is not recreational karate. Itโs real training, adapted thoughtfully for modern families.
Koryu Judo
Our Koryu Judo program introduces students to classical grappling and throwing arts rooted in traditional Japanese judo. Training emphasizes balance, control, coordination, and respect โ complementing karate by developing physical awareness and composure under pressure.
Judo is taught as its own discipline, with clear standards and careful instruction.
Focused Class Sizes
We keep classes intentionally manageable so instructors can coach, correct, and guide each student properly. This allows for better learning, safer training, and stronger relationships between instructors, students, and families.
Instruction With Standards
Progress is earned here. Students are expected to listen, try hard, and take responsibility for their training. We hold clear expectations around behavior, effort, and respect โ on the mat and beyond it.
A Community That Supports Growth
We work closely with families to reinforce positive habits, confidence, and leadership. Shinkai Dojo is a place where students are challenged, supported, and held accountable โ not entertained or rushed through a system.

Why Families Choose Shinkai Dojo
A Higher Standard of Martial Arts Education
Our curriculum is rooted in traditional Japanese karate and delivered with modern instructional precision. Students train in kihon, kata, kumite, and practical self-defense with clear structure and intentional progression.
Selective by Design
Shinkai Dojo is not built for volume. We are intentionally selective so we can maintain focused classes, individualized instruction, and a calm, disciplined training environment. This ensures alignment between families, students, and our standards.
Discipline That Translates
Students develop focus, accountability, confidence, and work ethic that extend beyond the dojo โ into school, athletics, and daily life. Progress is earned through effort and consistency.
A Community of Like-Minded Families
Our families value structure, education, and long-term development. Parents are engaged, students are supported, and the dojo functions as a shared space built on respect and mutual expectation.
Excellence Without Shortcuts
There are no quick belts, watered-down programs, or inflated promises here. Instruction is thorough, expectations are clear, and results come from sustained commitment.
